Development of Dynamic Load Cell and Data Acquisition System for Flapping Wing Force Measurement

S. P. Pramudita, Lavi R. Zuhal

Abstract

Understanding of force generation mechanism as a manifestation of fluid mechanics around insect flight is vital in order to treat the concept of insect flight to Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV). To study the force generation, an instrument to measure force generated by flapping flight was developed in laboratory environment that simulates insect flight to fulfill this objective. The load cell and data acquisition system were specifically designed as a low capacity load cell to measure dynamic low force generated by flapping wing model (~1N). The load cell was validated by several runs of experiment in towing tank using flat plate, as a simplified model of flapping wing, in normal flat plate and advanced rotation modes.
