Frequency Domain System Identification Modeling of Unmanned Small Scale Helicopter

Taesam Kang, Agus Budiyono

Abstract

One of the most essential and difficult tasks is to find an accurate representative flight dynamic model which also should be simple enough for practical implementation of control system design. This paper shows how to model the system dynamics of an instrumented-RC helicopter X-Cell using frequency-domain system identification method. The simple frequency domain procedure has been proposed to improve PEM (Prediction Error Method) algorithm for estimating the model. The recorded flight data were processed by suitable band pass filters by observing frequency response distribution. An acceptable state space model is one that can demonstrate a good match with the measured data and represents physical properties. The model can be used to develop a reliable autonomous controller.
