Propulsion of an Oscillating Flexible Foil

The aeroelasticity of a flexible foil undergoing heaving oscillation is studied. The focus is on the effect of elasticity on the unsteady aerodynamics. Unsteady incompressible potential flow simulations coupled to a flexible foil structural dynamics shows significant effects of flexibility on propulsive parameters. The characterization shows that there exists a threshold system parameter value where the propulsive parameters are either maximum or minimum. The results indicate that around mass ratio of 5:0, the optimum propulsive performance is achieved for a non-dimensional excitation  frequency of 10:0.
