Abstract

Telemetry schemes currently used in airborne platforms are analog (PCM/FM) and comprise of inputs from analog video and audio channels, data from analog vibration sensors, and parameters from various other inputs, etc. in the form of PCM frame. Transmission of data from airborne platforms to ground station is still a problem due to higher bandwidth requirement in currently used modulation techniques. To overcome these restrictions of bandwidth efficiency, this paper proposes a digital modulation scheme Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) as a bandwidth efficient modulation technique (following CCSDS standards) for L band and S band. Gaussian mask for GMSK as per CCSDS standards has been implemented on FPGA with the mask stored as a look up table in FPGA. FPGA gives a better platform for efficient implementation of digital communication schemes. Results of implementation on FPGA shows, GMSK is the most bandwidth efficient modulation scheme compared to Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) and Minimum Shift Keying (MSK).
