Development and Flights of Ant-Plane UAVs for Aerial Filming and Geomagnetic Survey in Antarctica

Shin-Ichiro Higashino, Minoru Funaki

Abstract

The authors have been developing two types of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) named “Ant-Planes” that can be used for scientific missions such as aerial geomagnetic survey and filming in Antarctica. We have stayed at the St. Kliment Ohridski Station of Bulgaria in Livingston Island of South Shetland Islands in Antarctica during 2011-2012 summer season, attempted and made success to acquire precious geomagnetic data and onboard video images over the north half part of Deception Island by the survey flight for more than 300km of distance. This paper describes the UAVs developed and the results of the flights in Livingston Island.
