Modeling and Flight Analyzing of a Portable Tail-Sitter UAV

Abstract


A portable tail-sitter fixed-wing UAV is proposed and researched. This type of UAV can not only take off, hover and land vertically like a helicopter, but also fly like a fixed-wing aircraft with higher speed than which in vertical flight status. The tail-sitter UAV have different flight dynamics and new flight modes and characteristics, therefore dynamics modeling and flight characteristics are researched and analyzed in this paper. Firstly, based on the CFD computation, the aerodynamics coefficients of the UAV is obtained and its 6-DOF dynamic model is developed. Secondly, the flight simulation platform is developed in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, and the different flight modes simulations are implemented using the platform. Through the simulation results, the flight characteristics are analyzed. Finally, a prototype of the tail-sitter UAV is developed and flight experiments illustrated the
simulation results.
