Underwater Communication Technologies for Swarm UUV Operations

Tata Sudiyanto, Vishnu Kumar Kaliappan

Abstract

Effective communication is a cornerstone of successful operations in swarm-based Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs). This paper explores various underwater communication technologies that facilitate real-time data exchange among swarm UUVs during coordinated missions. We analyze acoustic communication systems, optical communication, and emerging technologies such as underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). The advantages and limitations of each communication method are discussed, with a focus on their impact on swarm behavior, mission efficiency, and data throughput. Case studies demonstrate the practical application of these technologies in swarm operations, highlighting their role in enhancing situational awareness and collaboration among UUVs. This research provides insights into the future development of underwater communication systems, essential for advancing swarm UUV capabilities in various marine applications.
