Variable-Pitch Propeller Design for “Stingray 500” Quad Copter in Hovering Condition

Propeller is one of the thrust generating devices that is widely used in flying vehicle exists in the world. Despite its old aged first discovery, propeller still has its advantages over the newer thrust devices. This research focuses on designing a propeller of the quad copter Stingray 500 with variable-pitch propeller system for a surveillance mission, which was originally for aerobatics purpose. Surveillance requires a flying vehicle to hover as long as possible in a designated area, so that the mission changes will be carried out by replacing the current propeller into a more efficient propeller in hovering condition. After conducting an analysis of the current propeller in hovering conditions with various pitch angle, propeller
design is conducted with three types of airfoil. By using momentum-blade element theory for propellers, propeller analysis and design is done. In this research, designing a small-sized propeller is strongly influenced by its airfoil lift coefficient value that affected the value of the Reynolds number. If the lift coefficient is too large, propeller will have thin chord distributed along the span. This causes the Reynolds number to become small and the airfoil aerodynamic efficiency go down. Even though an airfoil has a high efficiency in every Reynolds number compared to the other airfoils, the propeller design results will have a bad performance if that happens. Also when designing a hovering mission propeller, the span wise twist angle generated along the propeller differs a little on the span wise angle of attack when compared to a just straight propeller blade, so it can be considered a cheaper manufacturing cost.
